The first room I come to after the doll's-house queue is dedicated to William Shakespeare and includes among its initial displays a wellknown 1685 portrait in which the playwright looks owl-like and pensive, with protuberant eyes, stubble, pursed lips, the hint of a double chin, and hair that has receded to the point of baldness except for strands over his ears. In a cabinet near this portrait is an original copy of the 1623 First Folio containing his works; Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, and a few months ago it was the 400th anniversary of his death. This exhibition room is connected to the occasion. Shakespeare is said to have written The Merry Wives of Windsor in 1597 while staying at an inn just outside the castle gates; the play was first performed here for Queen Elizabeth. He would have known the Thames well. In a corner of this room there is a panoramic 1647 etching of London by the Czech artist Wenceslaus Hollar, taken from the perspective of the tower of Southwark Cathedral, in which the Globe Theatre features in the foreground. Shakespeare lived somewhere near the Globe and later in Blackfriars. He would regularly have travelled on the river. Shakespeare, you could say, was a Thames man.
